Trying out for middle school basketball next year?

So im a cheerleader for our schools bball team right now, but i was thinking about trying out for the basketball team next year(ill be in 8th grade) but, i have NO experience at all! if there arent too many girls, then everyone makes the team. but would i just be making a fool out of myself by trying out n making it? i hardly know any of the rules. my dad and sisters said theyll teach me over the summer, but thats all of the experience ill have. should i try out or not?
